Who handles what: village vs town

Village or town? Who handles winter parking, leaves, trash, recycling and alerts in Fairport and Perinton, with office hours and phone numbers.

Live in Fairport and not sure whether to call the village or the town? It depends on which side of the village line you're on. The Village of Fairport sits inside the Town of Perinton, so village residents are town residents too, but parking, leaves, trash and alerts are split between the two governments. Here is who does what, with the numbers to call.

First, check where you are

A Fairport mailing address doesn't settle it, and neither does your school district (Perinton is split among five) or your electric bill (Fairport Electric serves well past the village line). Use the village's Am I in Fairport? map, or read Which side of the village line are you on?

Parking

  • Downtown lots (village): six free municipal lots with more than 900 spaces. Fairport Electric lists 24 public EV charging ports across lots A to F on North Main Street, Liftbridge Lane East and South Main Street; charging prices aren't posted.

  • Village streets in winter: no parking 3 to 7 am, November 1 through April 1.

  • Town streets in winter (Town Code 194-7): no parking 2 to 7 am, November 1 through April 1, and cars can be ticketed or towed. If yours is towed, call Perinton Public Works at 585-223-5115.

On village streets, the village rule is the one posted. The town's ordinance covers "all public streets in the Town," and neither government says whether it is enforced on village streets, so if you park on a village street overnight, moving the car by 2 am keeps you clear of both.

Leaves

  • Town (Highway Department): crews vacuum loose piles from Labor Day until snow; one pass of the whole town takes about 4 to 6 weeks. Rake leaves to the edge of your property, parallel to the curb, not onto the pavement or behind mailboxes or hydrants. Bagged or boxed leaves aren't collected. Keep sticks out of the piles; yard debris goes in reusable containers without lids, under 50 pounds.

  • Village (DPW): the town program doesn't cover village streets. Village crews collect leaves from the last week of October through mid-December, or until the first significant snow; put small piles in containers. Street-by-street dates aren't posted, so call village DPW at 585-223-9500.

Trash and recycling

  • Village: DPW collects trash on the 2026 schedule. Waste Management picks up recycling under a contract between the town and the village: plastics #1 to #7, paper, cans, glass and bundled cardboard, but no plastic grocery bags. Recycling questions: 585-254-3500. Blue bins are at DPW, 22 Water Street.

  • Town: you hire your own trash hauler, one of six the town permits (the list, with phone numbers), and it takes your recycling too. Electronics recycling is by appointment in October and pauses November through April. Household hazardous waste goes to the Monroe County Ecopark, by appointment.

Alerts

The village and the Fairport Municipal Commission send alerts through Everbridge, covering board meetings, Fairport Electric, police and events. Perinton runs PASS text and email alerts.
