A National Register historic district in the southwest part of the village. It takes in the Potter family's 1858 house and carriage barn, Potter Park, and the 20 houses on Potter Place. It was listed on August 18, 2017.

The district covers about 16 acres. West Church Street is its north edge, Lewis Street its south edge and Dewey Avenue its west edge. Potter Place runs north to south through it, with the houses on the west side of the street and the park on the east.

Alfred and Huldah Potter bought the house at 53 West Church Street and its 16 acres in 1871 and remodeled the house more than once. The family opened Potter Place around 1886 and recorded a subdivision on part of the estate in 1910. The houses went up between 1909 and 1953, in Colonial Revival, Neoclassical, Prairie, Craftsman and Tudor Revival styles.

Fred Potter died in 1943 and left the rest of the estate to the village. The village made the house a community center and the grounds Potter Memorial Park, now Potter Park. The listing recognizes the district for the village's early 20th-century residential growth and for its architecture.

Good to know

  • The Potter Place houses are private homes. The village sold the Potter house at 53 West Church Street in 2023, and it is now a residential property.

  • A William G. Pomeroy Foundation marker from 2020 stands at 1 Potter Place.

  • The district is on the National Register only. The village has not designated it as a local historic district.

  • Stop 1 of the Portals to Our Past sign tour is about the Potter property.
