Kids get a long weekend. Fairport and Penfield schools have no classes on Friday, October 9, Pittsford's calendar marks it a conference day, and all three districts are closed on Monday, October 12 for Indigenous Peoples' Day and Columbus Day. So plan around Friday: a day off when the weekday things still run, including an afternoon lock cruise on the canal.

The National Weather Service's early forecast calls for mostly sunny skies on Friday and Saturday, with highs near 66 and 65 and a low near 44 Friday night. That is a forecast, not a promise; look again on Thursday.

October 9Friday

Walk-in flu shots, 9 am to noon. Room 209 at the Perinton Community Center, 1350 Turk Hill Road, for adults 18 and older. No appointment needed. Bring a photo ID and your insurance card; most plans and Medicare are accepted, and cash or check for those paying themselves.

A lock cruise on the Colonial Belle, 1 to 4 pm. Three hours on the Erie Canal from Packett's Landing, narrated, with a pass through a lock. Tickets are $44 for adults, $34 for ages 10 and under and free for ages 3 and under; with lunch, $67 and $57. The boat may cancel for bad weather or too few passengers, and its season ends October 30.

October 10Saturday

Oktoberfest on the canal, noon to 3 pm. The Colonial Belle's three-hour lock cruise from Packett's Landing, with a German meal and live German music by Marianna. It costs $86 a person, plus 8% sales tax on food, and booking is online.

The Petty Project at Iron Smoke Distillery, 3:30 pm. A Saturday afternoon tribute set to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, for $5, at the whiskey distillery on Parce Avenue. Age policy isn't posted.

A reception for Kim Fink at Railroad Street Artworks, 4 to 6 pm. The artist co-op gallery on Railroad Street marks its October featured artist. Gallery admission is free.

October 11Sunday

The Orange Trail finale on the Crescent Trail, 1:30 pm. A free guided hike of about six miles, the last leg of the Orange Trail end-to-end challenge, with some difficult sections. Meet at the Northside School parking lot, 150 Hamilton Road; a town bus takes hikers to White Brook Nature Area and you hike back north. The hiking group says it very rarely cancels for weather.

Trash pickup runs a day late

Inside the village, residential trash and recycling are picked up one day late this week; commercial pickup does not change. Perinton's yard debris pickup also runs one day late. Private trash haulers set their own holiday schedules.
