# Permits, inspections and renter help: where to start

Building permits, inspections and certificates of occupancy go through a different office depending on which side of the village line you're on. Inside the Village of Fairport, it's the village's [Building, Planning, Zoning and Code Enforcement office](https://www.village.fairport.ny.us/departments/building_planning___zoning_code_enforcement/index.php); everywhere else in Perinton, it's the town's [Building and Codes Department](https://perinton.gov/departments/public-works/building-and-codes-department/). Not sure which side you're on? Here's [how to tell](village-within-perinton.md).

Renters with questions about leases, security deposits, repairs and living conditions, or subletting can start with the New York Attorney General's [Residential Tenants' Rights Guide](https://ag.ny.gov/publications/residential-tenants-rights-guide). For dog licenses and shelter rentals, start at the town's [Residents page](https://perinton.gov/residents/).
