# Moving to Fairport or Perinton: the practical basics

Looking for a home rather than settling into one? See [Homes and housing in Fairport and Perinton](./moving-to-fairport.md).

A Fairport mailing address does not tell you who picks up your trash, who sends your electric bill or which school your kids will attend. The Village of Fairport sits inside the Town of Perinton, and the line between them decides most of it. These are the fall 2026 rules; a few depend on your exact address, and we say so where they do.

## First: are you in the village?

Every village resident is also a town resident, but not the other way around, and a Fairport mailing address doesn't settle it. Put your address into the village's [Am I in Fairport? map](https://fmcvof.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=b1b759717e61409180f3b482c6c77d3b). Inside the line you get village services on top of town services. Outside it, the town is your local government. [Which side of the village line are you on?](../updates/village-within-perinton.md) explains what the line does and doesn't decide.

Village Hall is at 31 South Main Street, 585-223-9500, open weekdays 8 am to 4 pm. Perinton Town Hall is at 1350 Turk Hill Road, 585-223-0770, open weekdays 9 am to 5 pm.

## Electric

Fairport Electric is owned by the village, but its wires run well past the village line into parts of Perinton, so a Fairport Electric bill does not mean you live in the village. Check your address on its [service area map](https://fmcvof.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8bfc000f0b4a4c5caa83ec996be2bdd1).

Moving out of a Fairport Electric address? Send the [final-reading request](https://www.village.fairport.ny.us/departments/electric_department/moving_and_final_reading_request.php) no more than a week before you go. Moving in may need a separate application for new service.

## Trash and recycling

**In the village,** the Department of Public Works collects trash on the schedule posted on the [refuse and recycling page](https://www.village.fairport.ny.us/departments/public_works1/refuse_and_recycling_collection.php), with rules for what goes out and how. Waste Management picks up recycling under a contract the town and village share: plastics #1 through #7, paper, metal cans, glass bottles and jars, and cardboard cut down and bundled. Plastic grocery bags are not accepted.

**Outside the village,** you hire your own trash hauler. The town keeps a [list of the private haulers](https://perinton.gov/departments/public-works/highway/private-garbage-recycling-hauler-information/) allowed to collect in Perinton; some serve only parts of town.

## Schools

Perinton is split among five school districts: Fairport, Penfield, Pittsford, Victor and East Rochester. Neither your mailing address nor the village line tells you which one you're in; the district does. The town's [residents page](https://perinton.gov/residents/) links each district.

## Parks and trails

The Erie Canalway Trail runs through the town and the village. The Crescent Trail is about 35 miles of footpaths that link to the canal trail and the RS&E Trolley Trail. Keep dogs leashed, leave bikes at home, and stay on the path, because many sections cross private land. In the village, Kennelley Park, its gazebo and the canal pavilions are open to the public. You'll also hear about two hamlets in the town: Egypt, in the southeast, and Bushnell's Basin, in the southwest.

## Buses

RTS Route 50 (Fairport/Penfield) runs seven days a week, about every two hours, and stops at Village Hall. RTS On Demand, the book-a-ride service, has run weekdays only since September 7, 2026, until 8 pm, at $3 a ride. Check that your address is inside its zone before you count on it.

## Renting, permits and property records

Building permits and inspections go to whichever code office covers your address: the town's Building and Codes Department or the village's Building, Planning and Zoning office. For leases, deposits and repairs, the state Attorney General's [tenants' rights guide](https://ag.ny.gov/publications/residential-tenants-rights-guide) is the plain-language reference. Monroe County's [property portal](https://www.monroecounty.gov/property) has tax and past-sale records for any parcel; those are history, not asking prices.

Thinking of renting a place out short term? In the town outside the village, paid stays under 28 nights are not allowed in residential, apartment, townhouse, industrial and planned-development districts, and need a permit in business, commercial and mixed-use districts. The village has its own zoning code, Chapter 551, adopted February 9, 2026, with its own rules. Neither tells you whether a particular house qualifies; ask the code office before you list it.

## Keeping up

Both governments will text or email you: the village uses Everbridge, and the town runs PASS. The Village Board meets the second Monday of the month at 6 pm at Village Hall; in October it meets on Tuesday, October 13. For the projects that will change your street or your walk, start with [Main Street's streetscape](../updates/main-street-streetscape-status.md) and the [Turk Hill Road sidewalk](../updates/turk-hill-road-sidewalk-project.md).
